Send Danny to the Hall
“The website dedicated to help Pittsburgh Pirate Manager Danny Murtaugh get elected to the 2010 Hall of Fame”
Welcome! As a young boy growing up in central Pennsylvania in the 1960s, baseball was a part of my everyday life. I just could not get enough of it. Being from Mt. Union, PA, that love also centered around the Pittsburgh Pirates. They were family to me. I was delighted when they won and distraught when they lost. There was one strong and central figure present throughout all of those years – MANAGER DANIEL “DANNY” EDWARD MURTAUGH. From 1948 to his death in 1976, Danny Murtaugh was the heart and soul of the Pittsburgh Pirates. It is almost unheard of for a player and/or manager to devote so much of his life to one team in today’s times. Make no mistake about it, Danny Murtaugh is to the Pittsburgh Pirates just as much as Walter Alston and Tommy Lasorda are to the Dodgers or Earl Weaver is to the Orioles. His winning percentage and world championships are equal to or better than more than half of the managers already in the Hall of Fame, but almost more importantly, his character and impact on the city of Pittsburgh and on Major League Baseball are representative of the type of person the Hall of Fame was created to recognize.
I had the privilege of meeting Danny in October 1976 shortly after he retired while he was visiting his daughter and grandchildren in Greenville, Pennsylvania. I was in college and was told that he was visiting his family. I had enough nerve to knock on his door to ask if he would like to help us in our charity drive for the Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. Sadly, he mentioned going to the Winter Baseball meetings in December, but he died just prior to departing for the meetings. But what I remember most of all at that meeting with him on his porch was that here was this man that was in bad health standing there talking to a 21 year old student about baseball and giving me all the respect in the world and acting like he enjoyed being there with me. That is Danny Murtaugh.
This site is developed to give the fans the knowledge needed to support our push to get Danny Murtaugh in the Hall of Fame. Look around, give me feedback on the site but, most importantly, DO WHAT YOU CAN DO TO GET DANNY MURTAUGH ELECTED TO THE HALL OF FAME.
